is the fourth most populous city in the US state of New York. With a population of about 195,976, Yonkers is the most populous city in Westchester County. The city borders the New York City borough of the Bronx. The city borders the Riverdale, Woodlawn, and Wakefield sections of the borough. Yonkers have been also just 2 miles north of the northernmost point of Manhattan. The city occupies 20.3 square miles of land. The Bronx River separates it from Mount Vernon, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, Bronxville and Scarsdale to the east.
The land on which the city is built was part of a 24,000 acre land grant known as Colen Donck. This grant was purchased by Adriaen van der Donck, in July 1645. He was locally known as the Jonkheer or Jonker, from which the Yonkers name was directly derived. The area contains many small residential enclaves and communities. It is divided into four quarters, demarcated by the Saw Mill River.
