Southport is a census-designated place of the town of Fairfield, Connecticut, located along Long Island Sound between the Mill River and Sasco Brook. The place is historically significant because of its harbor, churches, public buildings and the homesteads of some of the first families in southwestern Connecticut. The place got its present name in 1831 and by 1853 it had its own local government as a borough with the town of Fairfield. During that time, it became a leading coastal port on Long Island Sound to carry produce goods to and forth to New York City.
